France Will Reopen To Americans in May

French President Emmanuel Macron said France will "progressively lift" travel restrictions at the beginning of May, including for American citizens who are vaccinated. Macron said initial plans have been discussed with the White House. He further noted, “We are working hard to propose a very concrete solution, especially for U.S. citizens who are vaccinated,” and “with a special pass.” Film industry professionals now will be able to attend the Cannes Film Festival which is currently scheduled to run July 6-17.

The country is also working on a certificate for test or vaccine records — like a vaccine passport — to use for travel between European countries. Macron mentioned that his government is in the final stage of developing of such certificate, creating the possibility that a summer vacation in France will no longer just be a hope but a reality for Americans.

As for cultural venues, Macron said that some of them could reopen between mid-May and mid-June, along with cafés and restaurants. The government previously announced a three-part scheme for the reopening of cinemas, which would start with a 35% cap on auditorium’s capacities for four weeks, then a 50% cap for one month.
